The FBI reported about 9 million property crimes for 2011, which is already an improvement over the 9.8 million in 2007. As the name implies, these crimes are directed against a person's possessions, such as theft, trespassing, and burglary. As the incidence of these events is expected to remain relatively high in succeeding years, citizens are advised to improve their home security in any way they can.

Working with a home security monitoring service is one of these ways, and is often cited to be one of the more effective steps that helps prevent crime. The idea behind this is that alarms are monitored by a separate station, notifying authorities and their clients once they sound. Monitored alarms come in many forms such as standard trip alarms, motion sensors, and CCTV cameras.

The message sent by the monitoring station is traditionally sent via phone lines, although some companies now use cellular, digital, or analog radio to do the same thing. Still, there are those who use a combination of these to transmit their message in an effort to work around each one's limitations. Some have also adopted better transmission protocols like ASAP to send messages even faster for quicker response times.
